Trips to the Bony Pony Horse Ranch
A group of lucky kids from one of LA's youth homes visits the dude ranch each month to participate in a variety of activities. In this incentive-based program, these kids earn the opportunity to attend these "mini camps" through scholastic achievement and good behavior. At the horse ranch the kids are not only rewarded with a day that they will remember the rest of their lives, but they are also taught the importance of responsibility and teamwork. After a day of fun, the kids participate in animal care, including grooming and feeding the horses and other animals who live at the dude ranch. In addition to animal care, the kids are assigned to teams and they all help each other complete the necessary dude ranch chores. During these trips, the kids are treated to horseback riding, hiking and a western-style BBQ. They learn about and interact with the various animals residing at the dude ranch. These include horses (of course), dogs, alpacas, pot bellied pigs, Texas longhorn steer, chimpanzees, lions, tigers, hawks and various reptiles. These animals are part of the Bony Pony horse ranch family and the animals receive love and care year-round from the Bony Pony staff, the kids and from countless volunteers. The kids are encouraged to capture these precious moments on 35mm film, digital camera or on canvas with oils. This allows the kids to explore and develop their artistic skills.
Tattoo Removal at the Horse Ranch
Dr. Ryan, through the Bony Pony Ranch Foundation, has removed thousands of gang-related tattoos over the past 10 years. The removal of these tattoos is crucial if these youth are to leave gang life and be mainstreamed successfully into the workforce. The presence of these offensive tattoos can not only prevent an individual from finding employment, but can also be life threatening if a youth is walking in rival gang territory with the wrong tattoo. Incentive Program with Special Events at the Horse Ranch
Another incentive-based program offered by the Bony Pony Ranch Foundation involves exposing the kids to special events that the kids normally would never have access to. Youth from local youth homes earn the chance to attend these events through hard work and good behavior.
Trips to the Staples Center to see the Lakers and Sparks are especially popular. Concerts such as Madonna and N'Sync were also very popular. Especially fun for the kids are the movie premieres. There, the kids walk down the red carpet with the stars and get to meet and talk to the stars. After the premiere, the group attends the after-party and gets to interact with the cast some more. Recent premieres that hosted the Foundation include Collateral Damage, The Fast and the Furious, Legally Blonde and many others. Some of the celebrities the kids got to meet include Ja Rule, Vin Diesel, Tim Allen, Eddie Murphy, Gary Busey, Traci Bingham and many others. Mentoring at the Bony Pony Horse Ranch
Having a role model is an essential part of childhood. The Foundation facilitates meetings between the kids and adults that are successful in their fields. The mentoring can be as simple as a conversation over a BBQ at the horse ranch; or it can consist of a more formal type of mentoring in which the kids visit the workplace of an individual and learn in detail what led to that person's success and how the youth can create his or her own success in life.
